Hello, and welcome. I’m Sophie Lagacé, a Canadian expatriate now living in the United States. This page contains my professional musings about life, the environment, and our world, as well as links to good sources of related information and book reviews.
I am an environmental engineer now living in Eureka, California, back in the region where I lived from 1995 to 1999; then until August 2008, I lived in Seattle, Washington. I originally graduated in civil engineering from Ecole Polytechnique of Montreal; then, a decade later, decided to veer toward environmental sciences and completed a master’s degree in Environmental Systems at Humboldt State University, California. These days, I’m also teaching a few classes at the Environmental Resources Engineering Department at the very same Humboldt State University.
The photo in the page header is one I took of Port Angeles, WA from the ferry to Victoria, BC as we were leaving one December morning between Christmas and New Year’s Eve 2004. The Pacific Northwest is a beautiful area.

Is this the Pacific Northwest?
People are sometimes surprised that I kept the by-line on this blog, “I think globablly and work locally — in the Pacific Northwest”. Many don’t think that Northern California is part of the Pacific Northwest. But coastal California from about Mendocino County on up, as well as from Monterey to San Francisco, is part of the same Level I and Level II ecoregion (Marine West Coast Forest) as coastal Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska. We’re also part of the same Level III ecoregion as coastal Oregon and Washington, the Coast Range.
An excellent book to refer to for an in-depth overview of our ecoregion is The Rain Forests of Home, from Island Press.
